She's sixteen, cut her some slack.

[Yeah, she's not the smartest sixteen year old, but Rhys liked way worse boys.]

He didn't want i-- Oh shiiiiiit!

[Papa's back! And he's not happy!]

[He starts at Rhys' exclamation, and whatever smile he's wearing, not even a shadow of it survives the arrival of the dad on screen. He freezes again, and might actually be cringing away, because no no no don't try to stop him, you're going to make things worse]

[This time, Rhys catches it. The freezing. The cringing, and as Triton raises his trident, he decides to break the tension, speaking over Ariel's pleas that her Father stop.]

Hey, Hux? Buddy?

[Yep, making an executive decision to distract him during this part of the film.]

You tried the popcorn, right? What do you think?

[He flashes a lopsided little smile.]

[He's numbly watching the violence play out, and barely hears Rhys. This is really what he expected his boggart to turn into. He barely breathes, feeling he needs to see this through to the bitter end now.

But he doesn't shush Rhys and he doesn't move from where his back is pressed against the wall. His gaze hardens a little, twisting into a bit of a bitter snarl.]

[Finally, Triton aims his trident at the statue, and in a flash of light, Eric is blown to pieces, and Ariel is crumpled on the floor, weeping piteously.

Rhys doesn't touch Hux, even though he wants to.

Instead, he says:]

She's gonna get out.

[He waits for it to be over, surprised there isn't more coming, even though it felt like a lifetime. Finally, he replies to Rhys over the crying on screen]

I thought you said you hadn't seen this.

I haven't. But she's getting the fuck outta there.

[Because she's Rhys. And Rhys got out.

She's probably Hux as well. Hux needed to get out.]

[He nods, but looks utterly unconvinced. That smile's gone now, replaced with his usual scowl]

If you say so.

[This movie was supposed to be relaxing! Rhys shifts his attention back towards the screen, as Ariel goes in search of help wherever she can find it... in the lair of the sea witch.

This seems like not the greatest idea...]

[He's a little sullen when the eels begin to lure Ariel into the den of the sea witch, but at least seems to be breathing regularly again. But it takes a while for him to unwind from his mentally clenched position, and it's only out of shock that kicks him out of it.

Because holy hell, can someone really do what they promise? This seems...unsavory, but at the very least he approves of Ariel's fortitude]

She's equal parts brave and naively trusting.

Well, she's gotta get out. Sometimes you've gotta take a bad deal to do that.

[Also, Ursula's pretty compelling. She'd probably have been able to con Rhys into a dumb deal when he was a teenager as well.]

Oh god, she's really gonna do it, huh?

[The glowing contract emerges, Ariel signs...]

[He nods in agreement, fascinated]

Agreed.

[and who's to say he wouldn't have taken his chances, given what's just happened??

He gapes, though, when the transformation begins to happen, and realizes it a split second before Ariel does]

She's going to drown before they reach the surface. The pressure alone - how far down are they?

[Rhys just makes a vague sound of distress, as the transformation takes place.
Ariel gasps, and a gale of silent bubbles emerge. The fish and the crab sieze her and drag her to the surface, but Rhys only starts breathing again when they break the surface.]

They must have been close to the surface. Probably in like-- a reef or something.

[He's able to relax again at the same time as Rhys, giving a bit of a smirk at himself for getting so ridiculously invested into this, thinking she might drown after all that!

Hux reaches for the popcorn again, sniffing a bit]

I don't like the bird much. He's annoying and serves no purpose except to get in everyone's way.

Also, now that she has legs she's gonna have to use a fork at some point, so buckle in for thaaaaaaa--here he comes!

[Prince, prince, prince, prince!

Prince... who apparently doesn't recognise her.]

Are you kidding me? How would he not recognize that hair?

[Hux's scoff of outrage is similar in tone to Rhys, as he directs an open hand in disbelief at the screen]

What did I tell you? He's pretty but there's no brain there.

Yeah, she can do better. I mean, it's nice to be the smart one in a relationship, but you want a little competition.

[Ah well, at least he has a castle, that he's taking her back too now.]

Yes. I was worried about the timeline, but if he's this dense, getting a 'kiss of true love' from this idiot should be easy. Even without her voice.

[Hang on, he's getting up off the bed to get a drink. The popcorn made his mouth dry. He returns to the bed...with two glasses of water]

Unless he's too stupid to know a good thing when he sees it.

[Rhys proposes gravely. Oh, water? For him? How considerate of you, Hux!

There are a few cutesy scenes, before the famous Kiss The Girl sequence begins. Ariel and Eric, gently rowing into a romantic glade together while Sebastian directs a chorus of singing sea life.]

[And it's not even drugged! Hux makes no mention of it other than to get back on board, giving a worried look back at the prince]

That may very well be the case.

See, at least the crustacean knows the stakes. He's the only one with both the agency and the voice to get this done.

[Aw man they're getting so close...

The Eels tip over the boat!]

[Both his and Rhys' outbursts happen at the same time, which finally causes the cat to get up and leave in disgust, headed to the bathroom to nap on the mat in there]

It's not enough to give a timeline of three days, you need to cheat in order to win?!

Ugh! That's exactly the kind of bullshit she would pull!

[Typical Ursula manouever!

The film cuts to Ursula in her undersea chamber, yelling about what a hussy Ariel is, and plotting to keep the prince out of her hands. Even as she slips the shell containing Ariel's voice around her neck, Rhys can sense his dislike for her wavering.]

Does it say something bad about me that I still kinda like her?

She's charismatic. I can see why you would. And she's smarter, clearly.

[He leans forward, frowning]

She's going to impersonate her.

Wow, you think she'll manage to trick Prince Eric the intellectual Titan?

[he's still impressed though, as Ursula wraps herself in the illusion of a beautiful young woman, singing with Ariel's voice.]
